     There is a difference between these deranged psycopopathic individuals.  The distinction is the reason for the killings and the time period in which the killings take place.

    

                                                 * MASS MURDERERS *

    

     Mass murderers kill because of an event or an accumualation of circumstances that have or did take place over a period of time. 

     Stress, discontentment and frustration in their private lifes or possibly at their place of employnent builds to a boiling point and an mental erruption triggers a sudden explosion of rage causing a violence act.  

     The people they murder can be fellow workers, friends  or just anyone who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

     Usually, once they've committed their heinous act, they feel relieved, the pressure is gone and they become docile, providing that they aren't also suicidal.  Then, taking their own life brings down the final curtain of their blatant act. 

     Mass murderer's profile:  Most are males,white, conservative and are usually from average. middle-income families.  They feel the need to "get even" with all in the group they blame for their failure.     

     What motivates most mass murderers is the desire for revenge.  They see themselves as victims that have been dealt a raw deal and view injustice all around them.    

    

                                                 * SERIAL KILLERS *

 

     Serial killers are completely different in their actions and method of killing.  They are more dangerous in an insidious way. 

     History traces them back into the late fourteenth century in Europe.  Although, at one time they were thought to be few in number and scattered here and there, time has shown us that assumption was difinately wrong.  

     Serial killers do not kill many people at one time, but they  may kill at random from time to time or periodically for many years without being detected. 

     They are careful in their selection of victims which sometimes enables them to kill again and again without being caught.  They normally select victims who are vulnerable and un-able to defend themselves; young people, the elderly, gay men and women. 

     In most cases they select victims who will not be missed by society, such as; prosititutes, homosexuals, hitchhikers and people living alone.  Their pattern of victim selection can be based upon: race, general appearances, profession and even physical structure.

     Serial killers who usually go un-detected for long periods of time are the types that are mobile.  Similaries in crimes or a serial killer's modus operandi aren't picked up by the nation's law enforcement agencies because they're not connected.          

     Usually it takes the media attention to a certain crime that links other police departments (detectives with open cases) to make a comparsion.  Of course, it's different if the F.B.I. gets involved.  Their files are extensive and aways on going.      

     Most of the cases where a person is missing remain open.  The thousands of people each year just leave and attempt to begain a new life for a number of personal reasons.  That's why so many serial killings go without notice for long periods of time.

     Between Europe and the United States there are more than 250 documented cases of serial killers since the time of  London's "Jack the Ripper".  It is believed that there may be at least twenty-five serial killers active at one time in the United States. 

     Society has provided breeding places for these killers, such as; cities with areas for prosititution (male and female), blighted areas where drugs are sold on street corners or in drug houses, and homeless congregated areas.  This is not to say they don't operate in rural areas.

     The typical profile of a serial killer is they are well organized, above average intelligence, works and has transportion, most likely between the ages of 25 to 40, had a dominant parent, been in a few petty scrapes with the law at a young age, a high school graduate with some college (could have graduated), has taken the time to learn police procedures, checks his crime scene for evidence and either takes it with him or destroys it, keeps souvenirs, generally kills in the same manner each time and strives to perfect it, keeps up with the news and follows it closely.

     Their motives are sexual or to dominent their victims.  There method of killing is usually; strangulation, bludgeoning,  torture, and in cases mutilation.  They will continue to kill, but if they get the impression the police may be on to something that might lead to them.  Then they will stop and usually change their M.O.  

     They normally use one dumping site, but can choose another.  In either cases, they are within a twenty mile range of his killing locations.  These sites are where they tortures or fulfill their sexual fantasies.

       A serial killer will show no remorse for their actions and will also deny within themselve the responsibility for their crimes.

     Not all serial killers are men.  It has been estimated that about 15 percent are women.  They usually prefer to poison or suffocate their victims.

     Males on the other hand prefer to use extreme violence and stalk their victims, while female serial killers lure their victims into a situation to kill them.

     Serial killers and mass murders do share some things in common, such as; they appear to be normal in background, in personalities and even in appearances.  This could very well be the key to their "talent for murder".  After all, who would ever suspect him or her?

     Although many killers can fall into the serial killer classification, they are excluded because they fail to meet the exact definition or the media generated sterotypes of brutal, blood-thirsty murderers.  For instance: the "ANGELS OF DEATH" who work in hospitals and kill patients, or nursing home staff who kill the elderly.  Then, you have the "BLACK WIDOWS" who kill their families, relatives and the men they marry.  These men and women do not slash and torture their victims nor do they sexually attack them; they are what is called the "QUIET KILLERS".

 

MALE SERIAL KILLERS:

 

There are four "classifications" of serial killers: 

 

     VISIONARIES--They claim to hear godly vioices and are possessed by demoniac spirits and have alter egos who carry out the dastardly deeds of murder.

         

     MISSIONARIES--Also claim to be evangelical cleansers of society evil people, such as; prostitutes, homosexuals, and drug addicts.

 

     LUST and THRILL KILLERS--They kill for the sheer pleasure of it.  their methods include; rape, mutilation, vampirism and cannibalism.

 

     POWER SEEKERS--These crave noteriety and have a dominant impluse to have control over life and death.

 

Herein are a few case histories:

 

VISIONARIES:

 

     William Heirens (1942-1946) aka, "The Lipstick Killer".  He killed 3 young girls by slashing them to death after breaking into their apartments.  He's the one with the now-infamous " For heavens sake, catch me before I kill again.  I can't control myself".  His alter ego's named was "George Murman".

     Harvey Carigman (1972-1975) aka, "The Want-Ad Killer".  He rape, sodomized and beat to death 7 young females.  He claim to get his orders from God, a large figure who wore a hood to conceal his face.

 

MISSIONARIES:

 

     Vaughn Greenwood (1964-1975) aka, "The Skid Row Slasher".  A black man who ritually killed 11 alcoholic derelicts.  He cut their throats and sprinkled salt around their bodies. He also removed their shoes and pointed them toward their bodies.

     Carroll Cole (1971-1980) aka, "The Loose Woman Killer".   His claim to fame was 35 "loose women" in 7 or 8 states.  He strangled his victims and took their corpses home to sleep with.

     Peter Sutcliffe (1975-1981) aka, "The Yorkshire Ripper". This british sadist bludgeoned, stabbed, and mutilated 20 women, 13 of whom died.  He also attached prostitutes at night.  This so called "evangelist" said, "I was cleaning up the streets" because it was God's command.

     Carlton Gary (1977-1978) aka, "The Stocking Strangler".  This killer had a genius IQ who raped and killed 7 "granny type" old ladies.  He also had a copycat killer operating at the same time he was doing his thing.  William Hance, demanded $10,000 for killing black women unless the "Granny Killer" stopped.  Both were caught and sentenced to death by electrocution.

 

LUST and THRILL KILLERS: 

 

     Wayne Boden (1968-1972) aka "The Vampire Rapist".   This Canadian love to bite the breast of his victims.  He was a handsome devil who strangled his dates after have sex with them.  His trade mark bites got him convicted of killing 5 women.

     Tim Spencer (1984-1987) aka, "The Southside Slayer".   He viciously raped and strangled 6 women and 1 man.  Each of his crimes were a bit different making the police at first thinking it wasn't one person.  His DNA tripped up this clever killer.

     Danny Rolling (1900-1994) aka, "The Gainesville Killer".   This son of a police officer rapped and killed 5 girls in their dorms and left their bodies posed in a sexually explicit position. 

     Randy Woodfield (1980-1981) aka, "The I-5 Killer".   This Salem, Oregon bartender raped more than 60 women and killed at least 18 others.  He was caught by one victim's, who dragged her bloody body to a telephone, determination to have revenge.

     William Suff (1984-1993) aka, "The Riverside Prostitute Killer".  These deranged killer loved to impersonate police officers.  He also love to cook.  In fact, he used the breast of his victims in his prize winning chili.  It was said he had a " Jekyl-Hyde" complex.  His kill total was proven to be 13 , but suspected to be at least 22 women.

 

POWER SEEKERS:

 

     Dean Corll & Wayne Henley (1970-1973) aka, "The Torture Duo".   These two 17 year old glue sniffers raped, tortured and killed 32 young boys they picked-up as hitchhikers or vagrants.   Before killing them they were sodomize and torture for days.   Then, one day Wayne brought home a girl which upset Dean and he wound up a victim.  Wayne fatally shot Dean and called the police.  He revealed they had buried the bodies in a boat house across town.

     Paul John Knowles (1973-1974) aka, "The Casanova Killer".   In one year this indiscriminate killer murdered 18 people.  Usually along the I-95 corridor.  Who his victims were was of no concern to him. Rape and thrills were his motive.  Strangely enough, he was carrying on an affair with an author, who was writing a book about serial killers.  He was shot to death by FBI agents after an automobile chase in his attempt to escape. 

 

 

     In 1896 as he was about to be hanged, he loudly proclaimed. "As God is my witness, I was responsible for the death of only two women!  I kill Minnie Williams!  Minnie killed-".  At that moment, the trap door sprung and ended his life. 

     He was laid to rest in a pine box, it was filled with cement,  buried 10 feet deep and his grave was covered with a thick layer of cement.
